| I love these bowls and trays which were
made by 6th graders in one of the polymer classes I gave at my son's school.
Two bowls were made by each kid --a "cane slice" bowl (where individual
slices from canes are pressed onto an upturned, glass or metal form such
as a custard cup or mini-loaf/tart pan), and a "draped" bowl (sheet of
clay draped over an upturned form).
For both kinds, the clay is removed after baking. I made the canes for the caned bowls beforehand because of time constraints in the class, but I tried to use only canes the kids themselves could have made after our previous class on caning. The sheets for draping were made by marbling different colors of scrap and old clay, rolling into a large ball, pressing into a roughly oval shape, then sending through the pasta machine in the short direction for a final disk shape. Sometimes the kids decorated their sheets with cane slices before draping and shaping. They also had the option of using metallic powders, but most didn't. These kinds of bowls are really fun for kids, or anyone, to make and can be used later to hold all sorts of little things. More info on making these can be found
